Auction for Action: Betting on Mining Leaders (Including Our Own, Paul Rollinson)

Women Who Rock* recently held their first annual Auction for Action – an event that brought together twelve mining leaders who were auctioned off to the highest-betting geology, engineering, law or MBA student.

The event was designed to create mentor/mentee relationships between powerful mining leaders and dynamic young women studying to make a career in our industry. All of the money raised benefited the ALMA Foundation – a charity working to improve education for underprivileged children in Latin America.

Our own President & CEO Paul Rollinson, was one of the “mining leaders up for auction” – and he was “won” by Sandra Meng – an MBA student at Toronto’s prestigious Schulich School of Business. Other participating leaders included Pierre Lassonde (Chairman, Franco-Nevada), Dave Pathe (CEO, Sherritt International), and Virginia Flood (Vice-President, Rio Tinto Canada).

“I was fortunate to have won mentoring time with Paul Rollinson,” said Sandra. “The meeting at Kinross was amazing. I was a bit nervous, but Paul was extremely welcoming. We discussed what had brought me into mining, Paul’s own career path, and his advice on how to progress. What I learned the most is the importance of setting goals for both my career and life, to keep reflecting on them and the steps I need to take to achieve them, and to work hard.”

“As women, we are often not proactive enough in seeking mentors. Thanks to Women Who Rock for providing us with this opportunity.”
