Dvoinoye receives visitors from Russia’s northernmost settlement on the Siberian Sea

Our Dvoinoye mine recently hosted its annual Local Community Week, an opportunity for people from Pevek, the closest community, to learn more about our operations.  Over the week, Dvoinoye hosted visits from the Pevek Trade College and the Pevek Cultural Center, and celebrated Geologist’s Day.

Pevek, a port on the East Siberian Sea roughly 250 km from our operations, has a population of roughly 4000 and is the northernmost settlement in RussIa.

Eight students from the Pevek Trade College met the Environmental Team and went underground with the Mine Rescue Team to learn about mine ventilation, geological and surveying work and equipment maintenance and repair. The students also had an English lesson and a master-class on resume writing and job searching on the Internet.

“I never would have thought that I could find a job in Chukotka over the Internet,” said participant Alexander Zaika. “Our region is remote and finding a job is not easy. But now I know it is possible.” Added student Natalya Terkimenau, “I’d like to do an internship here, because the work and recreation conditions are excellent and I would have supportive people to help me become a professional in my field.”

“Mine tours of a company like Kinross are very interesting for young people here who are trying to choose a career,” says Viktor Klashkin, Deputy HR Manager at Dvoinoye. This year, three students from Pevek College will be offered internships at the mine.

Later in the week, Dvoinoye hosted a group of young people from the Pevek Cultural Center.  “We chose the youngest members of our folk dancers to provide motivation for them to continue pursuing careers in theatre. Rotation workers make a very grateful audience!” said Lina Scherbakova, Head of the Cultural Center.

For Geologist’s Day (April 5), the dance troupe put on a performance in which all employees took part, signifying the close cooperation between Dvoinoye and regional communities. Geologists working for Kinross were presented with certificates and gifts.

“I am glad that so many of our employees took an active part in hosting the visitors and organizing the site tours,” says Georg OstropDvoinoye General Manager . “Dvoinoye has demonstrated one of our Kinross core values - outstanding corporate citizenship.”
