Kinross helps bring light and cleaner air to local communities

Kinross’ Chirano mine has partnered with a local distributor of energy products to give out energy efficient solar lamps and cooking stoves to over ten communities in the Sefwi Wiawso and Bibiani Anhwiaso-Bekwai districts of western Ghana.

Since 2014, more than 600 lamps and 600 stoves have been distributed to communities around Chirano through the partnership with VIVO Energy, distributors of Shell products in Africa. The program aims to improve the quality of life and health in these areas, especially for women and children. The stoves have the added benefit of drastically reducing fuel consumption and indoor air pollution. When fully charged, the solar lamps can last for seven hours and have a life span of four years. They are particularly useful for girls who spend most of their day helping with domestic chores, and can only read and study in the evenings.

“This partnership demonstrates the shared commitment to local development. Ensuring that people in the neighbouring communities have access to vital necessities such as light and heat for food is a priority for us at Kinross. We will continue to support the growth of this initiative in the future,” said Ken Norris, General Manager and Vice President at Chirano.

Mr. Kwabena Owusu Ampong, the Commercial Manager of VIVO Ghana added, “we are touched to see the impact on many families first-hand, and will continue to work with Kinross to contribute in these communities.”

Kinross and VIVO will carry the project forward to meet ongoing demand.
