Kinross named Canada’s most socially responsible mining company

Kinross has been ranked the top mining company on the list of the Top 50 Most Socially Responsible Companies in Canada developed by Canada’s leading current affairs magazine, Maclean’s, and Sustainalytics, an independent sustainability investment research firm.

In this year’s rankings, results were categorized for the first time by industry and Kinross topped the “Materials” sector, which covers gold, precious and diversified metals, mining and packaging.

The recognition came just a week after Kinross was named among the Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada, for the sixth year in a row, by Corporate Knights, a media and research firm that promotes social responsibility in the private sector.

The Maclean’s/Sustainalytics ranking emphasized Kinross’ Site Responsibility Plans (SRP), which is the management framework used by each site to engage with local stakeholders and develop relevant community programs. The ranking also underscored survey results which indicate a notable reduction in poverty levels around our Tasiast mine in Mauritania.

According to recent surveys, the number of households living below the poverty line around Tasiast has been reduced by more than a half since 2011 and the unemployment rate has dropped from 47% to 24% -- partly due to our cooperation with the local Bedouin cooperative. Maclean’s also lauds Kinross’ signing, in 2010, of the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest corporate responsibility initiative, with more than 6,500 business and non-business participants across 135 countries.

“I believe corporate responsibility is core to both our overall strategy and day-to-day activities, and it will remain a key priority for Kinross Gold,” said President and CEO J. Paul Rollinson.
