Kinross sponsors Goodman Gold mining investment challenge in Ontario

Kinross was the title sponsor for the third-annual ‘Goodman Gold Challenge’, an international mining investment competition for students hosted by Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario.

The challenge offers undergraduate students a hands-on approach to the mining investment industry by evaluating the investment potential of three gold mining companies.

The teams interviewed CEOs of three publicly traded companies and analyzed the current and projected financial strength. The teams’ next challenge was to recommend one company as the preferred investment opportunity to a hypothetical client and pitch their selection to a panel of industry experts.

Gillian Gardhouse, Manager, Business Optimization, Technical Services, was a judge at the competition and spoke to students on behalf of Kinross.

“Participating in this competition demonstrates our commitment to developing the future engineers, geologists and financial specialists who could join the Kinross family one day,” said Gillian. “One of our values is a commitment to high performance culture and we saw students demonstrate this through their teamwork, strategic thinking and technical analysis.”

The competition supports the education and development of future members of the mining industry by stepping away from paper-based case studies and applying their knowledge in real-life scenarios.

University of Toronto received first place in the challenge; the team included Jihad Raya, Operations Strategy Intern, Toronto, and a former Operations Strategy intern at Kinross, Ice Peerawattuk. Megan Magie, former Operations Strategy summer intern, also competed and her team from Dalhousie University won the “CEO’s Choice” award for most impressive performance during one-on-one interactions with the CEOs.
