Kinross sponsors robotics competition in Magadan

Kinross recently sponsored a student robotics competition in Magadan, Russia, with twenty local schools taking part in the inaugural event, including children as young as five-years-old involved in the design and building of life-like robots that could sing, talk and even grab objects.

“We are delighted to support this promising project and hope it will become an annual event for Magadan students,” said Claude Schimper, Regional Vice President, Kinross Russia. Robotics draws on the disciplines of electronics, mechanics, computer science and engineering. It is popular in Russia amongst kids and teenagers alike. Competition winners received trophies and robot building kits as prizes.

Magadan Mayor Sergey Abramov applauded the students for their creativity and innovation. “May this competition mark an age of invention in our region. We need your wit and talent!”

Kinross has a close relationship with Magadan. The town is home to more than 75 per cent of Kinross’ employees in Russia and in April the company opened a new regional office there.
