Canada Day and Independence Day

The Maple Leaf and the Stars and Stripes: celebrating Canada Day and US Independence Day

Employees from our Toronto office and Round Mountain mine showed their patriotic side as they celebrated the Canadian and American Independence Days earlier this month.

Hot dogs, hamburgers, and Canadian staples such as maple syrup and poutine was served for Canada Day in Toronto. “The picnic was a nice way to celebrate the holiday and also connect with colleagues,“ said JT Pearson, IT Client Services Manager and Toronto social committee member. “We wanted to keep it fun and play up some of the typical Canadian stereotypes, like with the poutine.” Poutine is a popular French Canadian dish made of french fries dripping in gravy and topped with melted cheese curds. It definitely fattening, but it’s delicious!

In the US, Round Mountain held a picnic in the park to celebrate the Fourth of July. The family-friendly, all-day event had many activities including a 5K morning run, a fishing derby, a small parade and ended with a fireworks show.

Community members also had a chance to pan for gold and sit in the driver’s seat of a Round Mountain 793 Haul Truck, the day’s biggest draw.

“The mine site works really hard throughout the year and this picnic was one way of thanking them as well as celebrating Independence Day,” said Denise Carver, Human Resources Manager, Round Mountain.
