The next generation: Meet Kinross Toronto’s summer students in the Business Optimization and Legal teams

Kinross has a long history of training students and recent graduates through life-changing career opportunities in summer placements and our Generation Gold program. Our students are a key part of the Kinross team. This summer, there are 15 students from various disciplines working across the company in the Toronto office. Meet our summer students in the Kinross Business Optimization (KBO) and Legal teams.

Business Optimization - Evan Glowacki and Kevin van Warmerdam

Evan and Kevin worked together as mechanical engineers at Hatch, an engineering consultancy based in Toronto. They did a six month stint at Kinross’ Tasiast mine in Mauritania before coming to Toronto and joining Kinross.

“We were at Tasiast together for the commissioning and start-up of their infrastructure upgrade project. I was responsible for the sewage treatment plant, truck shop, and waste management facility. Evan was largely focused on building the new power plant,” explained Kevin.

Since moving from Tasiast to Toronto, Evan and Kevin have been involved with projects ranging from optimizing hauling and loading to due diligence reviews, as well as the Strategic Business Planning process.

“We were quickly integrated into the KBO team and given an opportunity to contribute right away,” said Evan.

The two studied engineering at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario in the same year (although they didn’t know each other then) and are about to enter their final year of business school; Evan is attending the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management and Kevin is studying at the Schulich School of Business in Toronto.

“Everyone has been helpful and supportive. I am glad to have had this learning experience and will miss the team when I go back to school,” continued Evan.

Legal - Mike McChesney and Adriano Lepore

This has not been your typical summer internship. Mike and Adriano have been working on projects ranging from employment to international law and supply chain management.

“We have learned so much from our bosses and each other. I have really been able to grow and am grateful for the experience,” said Mike, who studied philosophy at Laurier University in Ottawa and going into his third year of law school at the University of Ottawa.

Adriano studied political science at the University of British Columbia, and is entering his second year at Osgoode Hall law school in Toronto. “I’m from Vancouver, which is very mining-centric and I’ve seen what a major economic driver the industry is. I’d like to continue my career practicing law in a way that includes mining and I couldn’t have asked for a better summer job,” explained Adriano.
