Tasiast hosts Africa Environment Day, plants 200 trees

On March 3rd, Tasiast employees and members of the Chami community came together to celebrate Africa Environment Day.

A total of 300 participants worked together to raise awareness about environmental protection and preservation in Mauritania. Among the group were 48 Tasiast employees who donated supplies such as hats, gloves, glasses and t-shirts to ensure all volunteers could participate safely.

Volunteers were divided into six teams who were responsible for planting trees and collecting garbage around the city of Chami. By the end of the day, the group had successfully planted 200 trees and collected 230 barrels of garbage.

“The preservation of the environment is a key focus for the local development of Chami,” said M. Limam Sidi, Mayor of Chami.  “Working together with Tasiast we can overcome environmental challenges that affect our city and protect ourselves against any future threats that will impact our environment.”

This initiative reflects an environmental example of Tasiast’s ‘Be Proud’ program, that encourages employees to act as ambassadors and representatives in their communities of Kinross’ values.

Established by the African Unity Organization in 2002, Africa Environment Day raises awareness about environmental protection.
