Tasiast Mobile Clinics Bring Specialized Healthcare to Local Communities

The families that live in the remote desert communities that surround Tasiast have no access to healthcare or medicine – even treating the most basic conditions is challenging. But over the past four months, access to general care has improved: the Mobile Health Clinics organized by Kinross Tasiast have benefited more than 3,000 people.

Yet specialized care has remained inaccessible. People still have to travel more than 200 kilometres to get medical support for heart conditions, arthritis, autoimmune conditions or diseases of the eyes – and to gain access to ultrasound machines, bloodwork clinics, or medicine.

Until now.

In December, Tasiast organized a Mobile Clinic Campaign focused specifically on providing the local community with specialized care.

From December 12th to 19th, we brought Cardiologists, Rheumatologists, Ophthalmologists and other specialized medical professionals and testing equipment to Bedouin communities. The clinics also included a nurse and general health specialist offering education in Ebola, Malaria, Hepatitis B and HIV/AIDs. At the same time, the mine is leading an awareness campaign with a local NGO focused on water, sanitation and hygiene.

"I had problems with my eyes and teeth,” said Abdou Ould Ahmed Vall, a member of the Dawass community. “Now I have been examined and received the medicine I need. This is a very important initiative for us, the inhabitants of Dawass. We are very grateful to Kinross Tasiast for bringing these qualified specialists to our homes. It is a considerable help for us and the country in general.
