Twelve-year-old boy builds robot that solves Rubik’s Cube in Magadan

Can you solve a Rubik’s Cube? Well, the robots at the Kinross-sponsored robotics competition in Magadan sure can.

In an impressive feat of engineering, a 12-year-old boy from Magadan won the competition by building a robot that can solve the iconic 3-D Rubik’s Cube puzzle.

The third annual event brought together over 50 elementary, secondary and high school students from Magadan who were divided into 20 teams to compete for the cup.

Participants were tasked in advance of the competition with designing and building life-like robots that could sing, talk and even grab objects!

The competition was intense, with all teams striving for the top prize.

The awards ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Magadan, the Deputy Mayor and the Head of the Department of Education in Magadan.

“This event shows our commitment to education and development of students in our communities. We are pleased that it has run for a third year and hope to continue to grow the program over time in Magadan,” said Claude Schimper, Regional Vice-President, Russia.

Robotics is a popular activity in Russia that draws on disciplines of electronics, mechanics, computer science and engineering.
