Video: Adult literacy program helps 87-year-old man learn to read and write for the first time

Since 2015, Kinross Chile has worked with local Indigenous Colla communities to develop education and adult literacy programs.

The six Colla communities live throughout the Copiapo region and in rural areas of the Andean foothills.

One of the greatest success stories of the program came from Florencio Quispe, an 87-year old Indigenous man who learned to read and write while being enrolled in the program.

“I am very happy and proud to receive my education certificate today. Being a resident of a rural region of Chile meant education was difficult to come by. I have always dreamed of being able to read a newspaper or magazine, and with the help of Kinross, this came true! It is never too late to learn,” said Florencio Quispe.

Florenico received his diploma from the Ministry of Education along with 15 other members from Colla communities this April.

“This program was developed after consulting with local Indigenous communities who desired further education to improve employment opportunities,” said Guillermo Contreras, Manager of Corporate Responsibility, Chile. “The program demonstrates Kinross’ commitment to education and supporting Indigenous communities in an effort to improve their employability and quality of life.”
