Video: Kinross and Project C.U.R.E. deliver vital medical supplies to Ghana

Watch a moving video that shows the health benefits of Kinross’ partnership with the US-based non-profit Project C.U.R.E.

Through the partnership we’ve been able to support the delivery of vital medical supplies to health centres in the remote districts of southwestern Ghana near Chirano. In the video you will meet some of the children, nurses and mothers who have benefited from the donations.

Since 2012, 11 shipping containers have been delivered to Mauritania and Ghana. Each 40-foot container has around US$450,000 worth of medical equipment such as hospital beds, oxygen tanks, and phototherapy machines for babies who are born jaundice, which could otherwise cause brain damage.

“The community treasures this hospital,” said Elizabeth Ekua Abakah, Nurse, Bibiani District Hospital. “Project C.U.R.E. has actually saved the community. Otherwise, we would have closed down the hospital because we don’t have any money.”

A nurse assists a mother and her newborn child in Bibiani on hospital beds donated by Kinross and Project C.U.R.E.

Without the hospital in Bibiani, residents would have to travel at least 20 minutes to the nearest health care facility which could mean the difference between life and death in an emergency.

“There’s a rapidly growing population here and the government has a lot of demands on its resources. We are glad that we can help deliver these very important supplies and help with the health care needs of these communities,” said Ken Norris, Vice-President and General Manager, Chirano.

Kinross is expected to deliver another US$7 million worth of medical supplies to Mauritania and Ghana over the next two years.
