Kairo Cunha, Manager, Mine Planning, Toronto

Kairo joined the mine planning team in Toronto in 2017 after five years of operational experience at Paracatu and Kettle River through our Generation Gold program. Since joining the team, Kairo has stood out by using on-the-ground experience to provide a practical perspective that challenges the status quo.

Recently, Kairo has taken on projects at Paracatu and Bald Mountain that have generated significant value and cost savings for the Company. By thinking outside of the box and working closely with site representatives he has successfully identified opportunities for efficiencies.

At Paracatu, Kairo is leading an optimization plan to potentially add hundreds of millions of dollars in value to their mine plan through efficient expansion of the pit and stockpiling strategies. At Bald Mountain, Kairo has been leading the ‘Site Strategy’ module of the ‘The Bald Way Forward’ program for the last yearand has managed to help the team save tens of millions of dollars in operating expenses through operational efficiencies and upwards of US$20 million in capital expenditures through optimization of the Mooney heap leach pad. He has also been instrumental in mine life extension planning at Bald Mountain that can potentially add  approximately$30 million in additional cash flow and two years to mine life.

Aside from his financial contributions to our sites, Kairo worked tirelessly on this year’s Strategic Updates Day presentation ‘Mine Planning at Higher Gold Prices,’ an in-depth analysis of gold price planning optionality at each site.

“From mine plan optimizations, to our global Strategic Business Planning (SBP) reviews, Kairo remains in high-demand from our sites’ leadership teams due to his work ethic, and track record of results,” said Agung Prawasono, Director, Mine Planning. “Kairo is an emerging leader who will continue to deliver economic gains to Kinross in the coming years.”
