Kinross Gold’s Fort Knox mine is located in Fairbanks, Alaska, an Interior part of the State that experiences heavy snowfall and limited hours of sunlight during the winter months, with some days experiencing only slightly over one hour of sunlight per day!
In an effort to raise employees’ spirits during what can often be described as the ‘dark months’ of the year, and to curb the effects of ‘Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD),’ Kinross Alaska hosted ‘Tropical Week’ to encourage employee connectivity and to raise awareness of the mental health resources available at Kinross for employees.
The Fort Knox Human Resources department spearheaded the initiative, providing information during both line-outs and in the mill breakroom on the benefits and resources offered at the site, as well as tropical-themed treats to keep bright spirits alive!
The week concluded with an employee favourite – the Fort Knox team potluck – that encourages all employees to bring in an item for the luncheon as well as their favourite tropical-flavoured drinks. The event helps employees connect and enjoy time together during their breaks while taking their mind off the dark, cold winter months.
“Mental Health is extremely important to our workforce and remains a top priority across all seasons of the year. Tropical Week is a opportunity to spread a little sunshine across Fort Knox by combining lighthearted activities with meaningful conversations about wellness,” said Darla Gillen, Human Resources Manager, Fort Knox. “This week is a reminder that support and resources are always available to our employees and that team support surrounds you not only in the winter months, but all year round!”
