Last week, Kinross Gold reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable partnerships and investment in the African mining sector through their gold sponsorship of the 32nd edition of the Investing in African Mining INDABA convention, held in Cape Town, South Africa.
This year was Kinross’ fourth consecutive year providing a gold sponsorship for the convention that brings together industry leaders, government officials and investors to drive sustainable investment, strengthen collaboration and position African mining as a leading force for economic growth and long-term prosperity.
Mining Indaba achieved record-breaking attendance in 2026, with over 10,500 delegates, 1,450 mining executives, 1,300 global investors, 1,400 government officials and 625 speakers, joining the event.
Representatives from Kinross Gold’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT) attended this year’s convention including Paul Rollinson, CEO, Claude Schimper, Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer, and David Shaver, Senior Vice-President, Investor Relations and Communications. In addition to our SLT, leadership from Kinross Tasiast were in attendance as part of the Kinross delegation including Baba Salihi, Vice-President, External Affairs, Tasiast, and Jaylem Manhas, Vice-President and General Manager, Tasiast.
The convention kicked off with the Mauritania Pavilion’s grand opening led by Paul Rollinson and the Secretary General of the Mauritanian Ministry of Mines and Industry, Ebat Meddou Bilal, who cut the ceremonial ribbon to begin four days of promoting Mauritania as a stable, competitive and attractive mining jurisdiction in Africa.
Paul then presented on the main stage of the convention, highlighting Kinross’ partnership with Mauritania as a model of responsible mining collaboration. During his presentation, Paul emphasized the central role of the Tasiast mine in Kinross’ portfolio and our investment strategy, its operational performance and the progress being made in innovation and environmental management on site.
The presentation also detailed Kinross’ commitment to local communities, particularly through the over $22 million invested in-country between 2011-2024, our commitment to the environment through the commissioning of our Tasiast Solar Plant, and the strength of our long-term partnership with Mauritania that includes a strong national workforce and significant economic contributions.
“Since 2010, Mauritania’s government has been a trusted and strategic partner for Kinross,” said Paul. “I am proud of the success we have had in the country with our Tasiast mine, and the contributions it has made to the economy, mining sector and our stakeholder communities. We look forward to continuing this journey together with the Mauritanian people, and we encourage other companies to look for opportunities in Mauritania.”
In addition to Paul’s presentation, Baba Salihi presented at the convention during the ‘Mauritania Company Showcase’ under the topic ‘Mauritania, Land of Opportunities’. Baba presented on Kinross Tasiast’s role in the development of the Mauritanian mining sector, and highlighted the Company’s commitment to the region as an established operator and long-term partner in the country.
“Through our experience at Tasiast, we have seen firsthand how international investment can thrive in Mauritania,” said Baba. “We believe these investments not only generate real benefits for the local community but are instrumental in supporting the national economic development of Mauritania.”
