Chirano donates $1 million to help with the rebuilding of the Appiatse community in Ghana

In January, a tragic explosion occurred in the Appiatse community of Ghana, and sadly, resulted in the loss of life and property damage. Since the accident, we have extended our deepest condolences to all those affected by the tragedy and have focused on ways to support the community.

Our team at Chirano, which is located approximately 140 km away from Appiatse, promptly partnered with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to provide over US$25,000 of immediate relief items including food, water, sanitary products, clothing and mattresses.

A delegation from Chirano delivered the donation to the community and also met with various government officials to discuss additional funds and efforts to support reconstruction.

In addition to the immediate relief efforts, Chirano, through the Ghana Chamber of Mines, also donated US$1 million to the Appiatse Support Fund instituted by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources. The Chamber’s members donated a total of US$4 million to the Support Fund.

“When this incident occurred, our team immediately came together to create a plan for how we could support the community and brought it into action,” said George Nutor, Vice-President and General Manager, Chirano. “In the wake of this tragedy, I am proud to see how our teams, government officials and other mining companies have come together to support the community. We will continue to work together and share our resources to help Appiatse rebuild and recover.”
