Gold Winner: Mike Olson – Kettle River-Buckhorn

Mike Olson’s (Senior Mine Geologist) leadership of the Perimeter Test Hole program represents the very best of the Kinross Way Forward and why innovative thinking and execution matter to the bottom line.

Mike Olson (Senior Mine Geologist, Kettle River-Buckhorn)

In 2013, Mike was tasked with re-launching the Perimeter Test Hole program, which is designed to test ore zones beyond their modeled grade shells. Under his guidance, more than 14,000 ounces were discovered through the ore body definition program, with another 8,000 ounces added in 2014.

While this effort definitely takes a team of geologists to execute, Mike is the one who makes the decisions about “when” and “where” the exploratory drilling will take place.

The program’s newfound ounces are worth an estimated $25,000,000 and add roughly two months of production for the site.

“When it comes to adding value at Kettle River-Buckhorn, there is no missing Mike Olson. He is about driving programs that reach beyond the mine plan to find ounces that have a big impact.”
