Meet this week’s COVID-19 Champion: Anthony (Tony) Philips from Round Mountain!

In mid-May, we launched the ‘COVID-19 Champions’ program, a global employee recognition initiative dedicated to celebrating those who are making a difference during the COVID-19 pandemic by finding innovative ways to support their colleagues, the Company and the community.

The program aims to recognize employees who are going above and beyond to make a positive contribution in the areas of health and safety, innovation, community support and increasing team morale.

This week, we recognize Anthony (Tony) Philips, a clinic and emergency services supervisor from Round Mountain, for leading the implementation of numerous health and safety measures that help keep Kinross employees and his community safe during COVID-19.

Since the start of the pandemic, Tony has been in regular contact with the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and various local health authorities, monitoring the spread of the virus, and finding ways to improve efforts to protect employees and the community. In the early days of the crisis, Tony worked for three straight weeks ensuring the mine’s mitigation efforts were adequate and properly implemented across all areas of the operation.

Since then, he has played a key role in keeping Round Mountain employees and the community safe. Tony is available day and night to provide support and guidance at all levels of the operation, from daily temperature checks to planning and implementing new policies and procedures.

Tony has become both a leader and expert on COVID-19 response plans, and has been appointed as the new health officer for Esmeralda County, a community near the mine. By taking on this newly-created position that focuses specifically on COVID-19 mitigation efforts, Tony demonstrates his commitment to protecting not only Kinross employees, but also the surrounding community.

We thank Tony for his hard work, commitment and dedication to his colleagues and neighbours and are fortunate to count on his continued expertise at Kinross and in the community.
