Meet this week’s COVID-19 Champions from Chile!

In mid-May, we launched the ‘COVID-19 Champions’ program, a global employee recognition initiative dedicated to celebrating those who are making a difference during the COVID-19 pandemic by finding innovative ways to support their colleagues, the Company and the community.

The program aims to recognize employees who are going above and beyond to make a positive contribution in the areas of health and safety, innovation, community support and increasing team morale.

This week, we recognize Luis Henriquez, Health and Safety Superintendent, Maricunga, and Sigifredo Pereira, Health and Safety Superintendent, La Coipa, for their dedication to maintaining the health and safety of employees at our Chilean operations by implementing numerous preventative actions to protect our people and the community during COVID-19.

Luis and Sigifredo have led the way in Chile in protecting employees against COVID-19 by remaining in close contact with regional authorities, other mining companies in the region and colleagues across Kinross’ global operations to ensure Chile is meeting and exceeding guidelines and leading  in health and safety best practices.

At their respective sites, and based on their expertise, they have implemented processes and procedures, training programs, and awareness campaigns for employees and the community to reduce the spread of COVID-19. These include installing new contact-free door opening systems, distributing contactless keychains, creating equipment and vehicle sanitization procedures, and carrying out antibody testing and daily temperature checks to protect their teams. They have also made changes to the sites’ day-to-day routines by modifying shift schedules, enforcing reduced occupancies and physical distancing on transportation vehicles, shared spaces and camp rooms to improve contact tracing procedures and reducing contact.

Luis and Sigifredo rely on their colleagues to provide feedback and share ideas on how to improve their operations by hosting weekly meetings to gain a better understanding of high-risk areas in the field. Chile has also developed a 24/7 support program for employees and their families to support their mental and physical well-being during this challenging time.

The close partnership between Luis and Sigifredo has been beneficial – the pair communicate daily and work together to ensure we minimize the spread of COVID-19 at our Chilean operations. Their success could not be possible without their dedication and teamwork that puts our people and the community first every day.

Thank you Luis and Sigifredo!
