Silver Winner:
Mark Hannay, Business Optimization Manager, Toronto
Mark joined Kinross as a summer student in 2010 on the Strategic Planning team and later transitioned to the Business Optimization team.
A ‘star since day one’ Mark is valued for his ability to quickly engage on tasks and his eagerness to accomplish tough tasks.
One of Mark’s biggest milestones at Kinross came when he developed the Strategic Business Planning Abacus Model – a flexible scenario analysis tool that is used by our Senior Leadership Team to evaluate different future options for the Company’s portfolio.
Mark was also actively involved in the groundwork for the Fort Knox Achieving Excellence Project and Paracatu Asset Optimization project.
At Fort Knox, Mark was responsible for leading the processing team to identify and implement savings of $20-30/oz. with improved contractor and cost reduction strategies for the pads, and savings on liner sourcing for the mill.
At Paracatu, Mark spent a year working alongside Bob Musgrove, Ned Jalil and the Paracatu Tehcnical Services teams on optimizing Paracatu’s life-of-mine plan. Mark was responsible for communicating complex, technical changes in the plan across the team and up to senior leadership including new domains, block models, mine plans and mining costs.
Mark is currently focused on the Bald Mountain Juniper Project working alongside Bruce Thieking. The Juniper Project focuses on preparing the team for permitting submissions and project studies to support the next expansion of Bald.
“I think Mark’s future at Kinross is limitless. He always wants to learn from his peers and teach others where he can,” said Hélène Timpano, Vice-President, Operations Strategy. “He is an asset to our team and has made numerous accomplishments in his time here. I can’t wait to see what else he will accomplish.”
