Silver Winner: Tara Wiseman – Toronto

Tara Wiseman (Director, Total Rewards) oversaw a cross-functional team that overhauled Kinross’ current share grants plan design.

In 2014, Kinross was recognized with “Most Innovative and Creative Plan Design” award by the Global Equity Organization (GEO), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing knowledge and understanding of equity compensation worldwide. Kinross is the second Canadian company to win this award.

The “Most Innovative and Creative Plan Design” award is given to a company that demonstrates creativity in overcoming the many challenges to developing and implementing global share plans.

Tara accepts the GEO award in Miami, Florida.

As a result of the decline in Kinross’ share price, the pool of shares available to grant to senior employees was diminishing rapidly. Tara and her HR team led a comprehensive review of the current share plan design, with support from legal, finance, tax and treasury. The team was able to implement a new cash-settled restricted share plan, which enabled Kinross to pay out the value of the awards in cash rather than shares, thereby avoiding the need to ask for additional shares from shareholders.

The judges were impressed with Kinross’ innovative share plan design, which balanced the interests of employees and shareholders with the industry’s current economic constraints. “The design was creative and thorough, and yet provides flexibility for the future.”
