Tasiast Hosts Members of Mauritanian Parliament and local dignitaries

Tasiast has received two high-level visits by local officials and politicians interested in learning more about the mine’s environmental performance and ambitious Mauritanization program, which aims to increase the share of local nationals employed on site.

In early April, Tasiast General Manager Dan Snodgress hosted a two-day visit from local dignitaries including the Wali (Regional State Governor) of Inchiri, Mr. Amadou Samba Diallo. More recently, a delegation of parliamentarians led by MP Sid’Ahmed Sidi Baba Lahah toured the mine.

The visits provided an opportunity to highlight Kinross’s positive impact at Tasiast. In addition to providing programs in water distribution, and human and animal health, we have contributed to a 92% increase in general investment in the region since 2010. 87% of the site’s employees, including supervisors, superintendents and departmental managers, are Mauritanians, and this figure continues to rise as a result of our Mauritanization program which allows for a gradual and transparent replacement of expatriate personnel by Mauritanians

The parliamentary delegation, whose visit was part of a federal environmental monitoring program, was impressed. They were shown the air and water quality control systems, solid and liquid waste management facilities and cyanide management technologies in addition to reclamation plans.

The Wali expressed thanks for the warm welcome he and his group received. “What I was most impressed with was the importance that the company gives to its employees in terms of health and safety and living conditions. The fact that the company has a Mauritanization plan for national talent development is also of utmost importance because human resources are the real future assets of our country.”
