Silver Winner: William (Will) Heasley, Senior Mine Engineer, Manh Choh

William

Will joined the Manh Choh team in 2023, bringing with him over ten years of experience in haulage, environmental and mining engineering. Since joining Kinross, Will has made substantial contributions to cost-efficiency at Manh Choh due to his data-driven decision-making, analytical outlook and commitment to innovation.

In 2024, Will was responsible for generating US$400,000 in cost savings in a single blast by using cost-benefit analysis to compare 10-foot vs. 20-foot ore mining practices. His findings resulted in a strategic shift to significantly reduce dilution and improve ore recovery that have set the foundation for millions of dollars in savings over the life of mine.

In addition to his technical skills and experience, Will’s leadership has been essential in identifying and resolving challenges. When misrouted ore was mistakenly taken to the waste dump, Will stepped up to work across several departments recover the misplaced material and reroute it back to the intended stockpile. His resourcefulness resulted in the prevention of millions of dollars in lost material and showcased his deep commitment to financial stewardship.

Will’s commitment to financial discipline is not the only value he brings to the team, he is also a  mentor to his peers and an asset when working cross-functionally – whether he is simplifying complex engineering concepts or providing detailed documentation to help others build on his ideas – his work ethic is unmatched and brings tremendous advantage to the Manh Choh team.

“Whether he is optimizing production, mentoring his peers or improving safety systems, Will is always delivering results that make a measurable difference. His drive, analytical rigor and integrity make him a standout employee.”
