2017 CR Report Case Study & Video: Improving the Lives of Women and Children in West Africa

This month, we launched our 2017 Corporate Responsibility Report, an in-depth review of our Corporate Responsibility (CR) performance over the last two years.

As part of our Report, we highlighted four case studies exemplifying successful CR initiatives we have implemented across our operations.

Our case study ‘Improving the Lives of Women and Children in West Africa’ focuses on helping women develop income-generating skills, supporting maternal and pediatric health, and providing access to mentorship programs.

To enhance the living conditions around our Tasiast mine in Mauritania, Kinross’ CR program helps local women create economic opportunities through small business training and funding of micro-projects. Also in Mauritania, the Chami Health Centre has benefitted from donations of an ambulance, an electrocardiogram, beds and medication to provide essential medical services to people who would otherwise have to travel 250 kilometres to nearby towns.

In Chirano, Ghana, 180 women including employees, contractors and local community members, make up the Chirano Women’s Club, which is dedicated to empowering women through support, advice and mentorship.

“We realize that women are few in this organization, and therefore in order to be visible and effective, we needed to go an extra mile, so we decided to come together to share best practices and encourage each other to strive for excellence,” said Hilda Arhin, Founder and President, Chirano Gold Mine Women’s Club.
