Why Does Kettle River Need Coconuts to Make Gold?

Did you know? The Kettle River mill uses carbon made of burnt coconut shells in its milling process. The activated carbon manufactured from coconut shells is considered more effective for the adsorption of gas and vapour, and for the removal of colour and odour of compounds.

Carbon by the numbers:

  • One (1) gram of carbon has the surface area of 500 square meters (0.12 acres or 5,382 sq. ft.)
  • 10-25 grams of carbon has the surface area of a football field
  • 25 grams of carbon is approximately the size of an adult’s palm
