Kinross’ efforts to preserve and protect 120 water springs in Brazil’s lush Paracatu region was recently recognized with a prestigious environmental award. Paracatu received a 2014 Green Mine Award under the Environmental Indicators – Water category for its water springs recovery project.
In 2013, Kinross invested US$135,000 in the preservation initiative, which involved fencing springs that flowed into Paracatu’s watershed. As a result, the initiative helped revitalize soil and vegetation in the surrounding area, as well as protect the springs.
Established in 2013 by In the Mine magazine, the Green Mine Awards recognize projects by mining companies with operations in Brazil, with a focus on economic, environmental and social impact.
