Empowering Communities: Building Trust in Paracatu

The following video shows how Kinross works with local community members in Paracatu to monitor the impacts of the activities of our neighbouring Brazilian mine site.

Our operations in Paracatu, which are located less than a kilometre from the city of 84,000, exemplify the central role community engagement plays in maintaining our licence to operate. The site takes specific steps to reduce the effects of blasting by using the most technologically advanced electronic explosives available, reducing the amount of explosives and packing more material on top of the explosives to limit the escape of noise energy. Kinross works directly with local community members to monitor the impacts of its activities at the mine such as blasting, and instituted a 24-hour telephone hotline to respond quickly to community complaints.

This video is one of four case study videos produced for our 2013 Corporate Responsibility Report (available in English only).
