In April 2021, Kinross announced a partnership with Trout Unlimited to create the Alaska Abandoned Mine Restoration initiative – the first partnership of its kind between a major mining company and a conservation organization working alongside federal and state land-management agencies to restore the environment.
Kinross has committed US$540,000 over the next three years to support the first project of the initiative – the restoration of Resurrection Creek. The project will help restore a 2.2-mile segment of the creek by targeting waterways, lands and fish habitats impacted by historic mining in the state.
On August 13th, Kinross, Trout Unlimited and the US Forest Service hosted a commemorative event at Resurrection Creek with guest speakers, United States Senator Lisa Murkowski, and leadership from the three hosting organizations.
“We are very pleased to partner with Trout Unlimited to support the Alaska Abandoned Mine Restoration Initiative, and to work alongside the US Forest Service on this important project,” said Jeremy Brans, Vice- President & General Manager, Fort Knox. “This initiative demonstrates our commitment to responsible resource development for the benefit of the Alaskan economy while caring for the waterways, lands and fish that are so important to our communities and future generations.”
The event concluded with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting to commemorate the start of the restoration initiative. The restoration of Resurrection Creek is expected to run from May through June for the next three seasons, with an expected completion date in 2025.
