Our Tasiast mine in Mauritania recently opened their new ‘ladies’ lounge’ that will act as a leisure and networking space for the mine’s female employees. The lounge is equipped with televisions, computers, books and a game room.
The idea for the lounge came from female employees who were nominated for Women in Mining opportunities over the last year. The women felt it was important to have a space dedicated for women to allow them to connect with one another and foster mentorship opportunities.
A grand opening ceremony took place in January and was attended by Claude Schimper, Executive Vice-President, Russia and West Africa Operations and Gavin Ferguson, Vice-President and General Manager, Tasiast. Claude spoke with the women on the importance of the lounge and the opportunities that can come from women working together. He encouraged them to start their own committee representing the women of Tasiast and committed to meeting with them on each of his visits to the mine.
“I was proud to be in attendance for the grand opening of Tasiast ladies’ lounge. It is inspiring to see the motivation of these women who are passionate about connecting with one another and building a strong female voice at the mine,” said Claude Schimper, Executive Vice-President, Russia and West Africa Operations. “I am excited to see the positive benefits this lounge will bring and look forward to meeting with their committee in the coming months.”
