Eduardo Castillo, Plant Operator, Maricunga
Eduardo started working at Kinross 20 years ago, and since then has become an ambassador of the Kinross values at Maricunga and throughout the Copiapó community.
Eduardo, who is currently the Plant Operator in Fine Crushing, is described by his colleagues as a great leader who inspires those around him. An active member of the joint Health & Safety Committee at Maricunga, Eduardo is passionate about promoting safety at the site and in the community.
For many years Eduardo has volunteered his time to train students at local schools about first aid and emergency rescue procedures in case of an earthquake or fire. Eduardo always reinforces the importance of staying calm during a crisis and runs real life drills about how to properly put patients on a stretcher.
During the March 2015 extreme weather event at Copiapó, when torrential rains wiped out roads and stranded 560 Kinross employees at Maricunga for nine days, Eduardo played a crucial role in getting our employees home safely. He also was part of the team that helped create a temporary office to coordinate emergency assistance, selflessly volunteering his personal time to help the Copiapó team.
“Eduardo was a main pillar behind the clean-up efforts at Maricunga. He worked intensely for several weeks in a row and wouldn’t stop until we were back up and running,” said Yesenia Cruz Hidalgo, Work Hazard Prevention Engineer, Maricunga. “He didn’t see his own family for many days to make sure that his colleagues were safe. That is the definition of Outstanding Corporate Citizenship.”
