Kinross Tasiast partners with government and NGO’s for donation of medical equipment and emergency aid

Kinross Tasiast recently partnered with the Mauritanian Ministry of Health and non-governmental organization (NGO) ‘Project C.U.R.E.’ for a donation of medical supplies and equipment to the Nouadhibou, Inchiri and Akjoujt communities, and in addition, provided emergency aid to the Akjoujt community following severe floods.

The first donation included three shipping containers filled with medical equipment valued at US$630,000 that will help reduce maternity and child mortality rates by strengthening the medical and health capacities of the region in terms of equipment and technical training.

A second donation of US$150,000 was made to the community of Akjoujt after it experienced heavy rains that caused damage to the region. A commemorative ceremony was held in the presence of the Wali of Inchiri and the Mayor of Akjoujt to accept the donation that includes food and building materials to repair fences, and rehabilitate damaged houses and farmlands.

“We believe these donations are an exceptional use of our resources and relationships, and will improve the quality of medical care provided to Mauritanians,” said Hapsatou Bal, Community Relations Manager, Tasiast. “As we mark our 10th year in partnership with Project C.U.R.E., it is exceptional to see the benefits it has brought to our communities. We are proud of the healthcare improvements that have resulted from these efforts and are constantly seeking opportunities to make a difference.”

Since Kinross began its partnership with Project C.U.R.E. in 2012, over US$5.3 million has been invested in the healthcare systems of Mauritania, including 13 40-foot containers of medical supplies and equipment, worth an average of US$400,000 each.
