Kinross leadership attends ‘Investing in Africa – Mining INDABA’ conference in Cape Town

At the beginning of February, a delegation from Kinross including Paul Rollinson, President and CEO, Claude Schimper, Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer, and Mike van Akkooi, Senior Vice-President, External Affairs, attended the 29th annual ‘Investing in Africa – Mining INDABA’ conference held in Cape Town, South Africa.

INDABA is one of the world’s largest mining investment conferences that brings together over 6,500 investors, mining companies, governments and various other stakeholders, with the goal of advancing mining in Africa. In November 2022, Kinross signed an agreement with the Ministry of Mines to jointly participate in INDABA and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) Convention, held annually in Toronto, over the next three years to promote Mauritania as an investment destination.

The conference began with the delegation jointly inaugurating the Kinross/Mauritania Pavilion alongside the Mauritanian Minister of Petroleum, Mines and Energy Hon. Abdessalem Ould Mohamed Saleh. Together, they held a ceremonial grand opening of the Mauritania Pavilion to kick off the conference. Paul then joined the Minister on the Mainstage of the Conference for a fireside chat titled ‘Putting Mauritania in the Spotlight’ where they discussed the extensive mineral resources and attractive investment opportunities available in Mauritania.

Kinross Tasiast representatives were also in attendance at the conference and spoke on Tasiast’s achievements, in particular Dinah Asare, Regional Director of External Affairs, Kinross Africa, who spoke on the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion panel about Kinross’ efforts to advance DEI at our African operation.

“Attending INDABA is always an excellent opportunity to engage with governments, investors, international organizations, NGOs and other stakeholders operating in Africa,” said Mike van Akkooi. “We are able to network, share experiences and best practices. At the same time, it is an opportunity to further develop and deepen our relationship with the Government of Mauritania to support the success of the Tasiast mine for all stakeholders.
