Fort Knox celebrates 20 year anniversary, donates $600,000 to university

Fort Knox has turned 20! Two decades and seven million ounces of gold later, Fort Knox is officially the largest producer of gold in Alaska’s history.

“We are incredibly proud to reach this major milestone and I am hopeful for what the future will bring for Fort Knox,” said Eric Hill, Vice-President and General Manager, Fort Knox.

To mark the milestone, the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce hosted a lunch on November 1st, where Eric Hill presented a US$600,000 donation to the engineering scholarship fund at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF).

“Supporting education is a key focus for Kinross and we have a strong desire to hire graduates that know Alaska,” continued Eric.

Including this donation, Fort Knox has contributed almost $3 million to the University’s programs and scholarships.

“Kinross’ scholarships and support have helped many students achieve their goals,” said Interim Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Dana Thomas. “Such generosity has allowed students to get the education and experience they need as they prepare for their mining careers.”

Alaskan Governor Bill Walker thanked Fort Knox for its contributions to the community: “Alaskans are grateful for the mine’s great relationship with the local community. Your investments last year in over 150 local area non-profit organizations made a positive impact on many Alaskans and will continue to do so.”
