We are pleased to announce that Kinross Tasiast has provided $500,000 in aid to the Gorgol, Brakna, Trarza and Guidimakha communities in the region surrounding Tasiast who have been affected by recent floods in Mauritania.
The donation includes over 2,500 food kits consisting of essential ingredients such as rice, oil, sugar, powdered milk, beans and pasta to ensure community members are well fed during this challenging time. In addition, the donation has provided over 2,500 mosquitos nets, sleeping mats and blankets to protect communities from illnesses and varying temperatures, as well as 1,300 tents to provide shelter for families who have been displaced.
A ceremony was held in Nouakchott and Brakna where the items were presented to the Governor of Brakna and the Deputy Commissioner of Food Security from a delegation from Kinross Tasiast which included Baba Salihi, Vice-President, External Relations, Tasiast, and Hapsatou Bal, Community Relations Director, Tasiast.
“True to its commitments, Tasiast is once again providing assistance to the victims of rains and floods,” said Baba Salihi. “Delivered by our Community Relations department, this donation is part of an ongoing effort, following several contributions made between 2019 and 2022 in the regions of Trarza, Guidimakha, and Inchiri. The 2024 grant is particularly significant, with five hundred thousand dollars mobilized to support communities in need. I also take great pride in being part of such a meaningful initiative.”
This donation reaffirms Kinross’ commitment to providing humanitarian relief to Mauritanian communities in times of crisis and to support the longer-term recovery efforts for affected community members.
