Last month, the Chukotka Mining and Geological Company (CMGC), part of Kinross Gold Corporation, announced that it will provide US$750,000 to the Kupol Foundation until 2020.
“Kinross Gold’s support is very important to us. This commitment allows us to continue helping residents of Chukotka to preserve their culture, heritage and traditional way of life,” said Lyudmila Danilova, Executive Director of the Kupol Foundation.
The Kupol Foundation supports projects in the Chukotka region in four areas of social importance: indigenous traditions, healthcare, education and training, and sustainable development of small and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The Foundation, which was established by the CMGC in 2009, has financed and implemented more than 100 projects worth more than 85 million rubles (approximately US$1.5 million).
“This agreement confirms Kinross’ commitment to long-term social investments in Chukotka. The prosperity of indigenous people, development of healthcare and education, and success of SMEs are important conditions for the sustainability of our business and demonstrates our commitment to supporting our neighbours,” said Claude Schimper, Regional Vice-President, Russia.
By 2020, the CMGC expects to have provided a total of $3.75 million in the 11 years supporting the Kupol Foundation.
In addition, since 2014, the Northern Gold Company (part of Kinross and operator of the Dvoinoye mine, Chukotka) has also provided support to the Kupol Foundation in the amount of US$150,000 annually.
