Chirano recently contributed approximately US$350,000, in partnership with the local Municipal and District Assemblies, to support the Small Town Water Systems project for the Ahwiaa, Akoti and Etwebo communities.
The donation will provide clean water needed for cooking and cleaning and sanitation to the three local communities located near the mine that have a total population of about 4,000 people.
The Small Town Water Systems project includes a water well and 20 flush toilets that will be donated to the Etwebo community.
The Chirano team trained community members on maintenance methods for the water systems, in order to increase their longevity and sustainability.
A ceremony was held to commemorate the event. In attendance were several government officials, Kinross employees and Chiefs and elders from each community.
“Our goal is to live up to our core values of Putting People First and Outstanding Corporate Citizenship,” said Adriano Sobreira, Vice-President and General Manager, Chirano. “This donation demonstrates our commitment to promoting local development in areas in need by providing the basic necessities of life such as water and sanitation.”
