The Chirano Women’s Club recently hosted a ‘Women in Mining’ conference at the mine site to celebrate the Club’s third anniversary.
Fifty participants from Chirano and other mining companies in the region came together to discuss empowering women in local communities, sparking their interests in mining, and making a larger impact across West Africa.
Desre Sobreira, wife of Adriano Sobreira, Vice-President & General Manager, Chirano, and a women in leadership activist chaired the occasion and spoke to participants on how to be successful in the industry.
“As women, we need to find our voice in society, break the glass ceiling and push boundaries to be successful,” Desre said. “Regardless of the norms of our industry, we must rise above challenges that confront women’s advancement with determination to break those norms.”
Georgette Barnes, Chair of the Women in Mining Ghana advocacy group, also spoke to participants about her challenges as a woman in the mining industry and how to overcome obstacles to be successful.
“Female empowerment in the mining industry can only be sustained when women are ready and willing to help eachother attain their goals and to push each other to be successful in this field,” said Georgette.
The first Women in Mining conference was a great success and the Club hopes to make this an annual event.
