Gold Winner:
Oppong Kyekyeku, Environmental Superintendent, Chirano
Oppong was immediately recognized for embracing Kinross’ values, in particular his commitment to responsible mining and spearheading sustainable initiatives.
As an Environmental Superintendent, Oppong has led Chirano to winning two prestigious awards in Ghana: the ‘Environmental Stewardship’ award for two consecutive years, awarded to the best overall mining company in Ghana, and the Government of Ghana’s ‘Green Rating’ for three consecutive years, making Chirano the first mining company in the country to accomplish this milestone.
Oppong has also implemented numerous initiatives including the environmental awareness campaign ‘Water Everywhere but No Water to Drink,’ which focused on educating employees and local communities on the need to protect our water resources. Chirano is also a leader in the quality of its potable water and Oppong played a key role in training, educating, engaging and supervising the water treatment process, safeguarding the supply for employees and community members.
This year, he also developed strategies to reduce plastic waste and avoid single-use plastics at the mine and in surrounding communities. This initiative makes Chirano the first mining company in Ghana to have taken steps towards plastic reduction!
“Oppong is both a great leader and ambassador of Kinross’ values especially related to responsible mining,” says a colleague. “His improvements at Chirano make us an industry leader for environmental stewardship and make the mine a better place to work. Chirano would not be the same without Oppong!”
Oppong is congratulated by Adriano Sobreira Vice-President & General Manager, Chirano
