Kinross Tasiast recently sponsored the 11th annual ‘Nouadhibou International Marathon’ by providing a 250,000 MRU (US$5,400) donation for the tenth consecutive year.
The marathon brings together members of the Mauritanian community and international participants for fun competition and to promote healthy ways to exercise for participants of all ages. This year, over 3,200 people participated, including over 22 Kinross employees!
Racers took part in either a 5km, 10km or 20km race, that was in attendance by friends, families and Kinross employees who came out to support colleagues and the community. Employees also participated in the distribution of prizes including trophies, medals, Kinross backpacks and water bottles.
“The annual Nouadhibou marathon is an excellent way for us to continue building on our relationships with citizens across Mauritania,” said Gil Lawson, Interim General Manager, Tasiast. “Each year, the marathon brings participants from across the country, enabling us to engage with people who are based farther from the mine and show our support not only for our surrounding communities but our country as a whole. We look forward to continuing to work together on this event to help promote a healthy lifestyle.”
Kinross Tasiast has been sponsoring the Nouadhibou marathon since its inception in 2011, with the exception of 2020 when the marathon was cancelled due to the pandemic. Since our sponsorship to the marathon began, Kinross has provided financial assistance totaling 1.7 million MRU (~US$47,000).
