Kupol’s Hydroponics Project Produces Its First Harvest

In early November 2013, a team at Kupol picked its first harvest from its hydroponics project, an experiment to grow fresh produce at the Far East Russian site. Because of its location above the Arctic Circle, produce is costly to transport and often does not survive the sub-zero conditions. A group of Kinross employees and local community members worked collaboratively to create a makeshift garden within shipping containers on site. After two years of planning and eight weeks of growth, the team has successfully produced lettuce (butter, red and leafy green) and arugula. The team hopes to expand the project to the local community in the near future. For now, the next experiment is spinach!
