In 2022, Kinross Bald Mountain partnered with the Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital to develop the ‘Level Up 4 Health’ program to teach local youth the benefits and importance of living a healthy lifestyle.
Over a four-day period, volunteer community members, Bald Mountain employees, partner organizations and local businesses team up to teach youth the about mindfulness, self-care and the ‘why’ behind good health choices through fun, interactive activities to keep students engaged.
This year, representatives from Bald Mountain’s Mine Rescue and Health and Safety teams worked with the students to teach them the importance of fitness in mining. The students participate in a ‘tug-of-war’ style game to demonstrate how ropes are used during a mine rescue, and then put their teachings into practice by competing in a mine rescue relay at the assembly.
At the end of the week, participants and their families attended a ‘healthcare carnival’ for food and games, and to meet with healthcare services who provided resources and information to support the youth’s new approach to healthy lifestyles.
In 2023, the program reached over 1,000 students and 500 family members, bringing the total of students and family members reached since the programs inception in 2022 to 1,750 students and 800 family members.
“Kinross Bald Mountain has a major focus on the youth in our communities. After pandemic era restrictions were lifted, we noticed our youth were less engaged in their schools and behavioural health issues were occurring at an alarming rate,” said Joe Kemp, General Manager, Bald Mountain. “Our positive relationship with the Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital and other community partners enabled us to create the ‘Level Up 4 Health’ program to start addressing these challenges. Our end goal is that this will be an ongoing sustainable program for our rural communities.”
