See how Kinross Chile is supporting research studies for University of Atacama students in the Nevado Tres Cruces National Park

Kinross Chile is excited to announce the donation of three high-mountain shelters to the University of Atacama in support of student research activities in the Nevadao Tres Cruces National Park.

The Nevado Tres Cruces National Park is located in the Santa Rosa Lagoon of the Atacama region and often faces challenging weather conditions associated with being at a high altitude. Students at the University of Atacama frequently conduct research studies in the National Park to learn more about the environment, its history and ways to protect it, which led to a need for a sheltered area to provide safe conditions during harsh weather.

As a result, Kinross Chile donated three 12-metre-long shelters that come fully-equipped with lighting, heating, a floating floor and wall cladding to accommodate extreme weather conditions, oxygen therapy for those experiencing altitude sickness, and satellite phones to ensure communication in an area where cellular signal in non-existent.

Along with providing a safe space for researchers, the shelters are expected to attract new partnerships between research institutions and the University to further explore resources in the area to gain a deeper understanding of the environment and how best to preserve it.

“We are excited to open the doors of the three new shelters to support the research activities of students at the University of Atacama,” said Lindsay Maw, Vice-President and General Manager, Kinross Chile. “This partnership is a great example of how we can work together with our stakeholders to provide facilities that help protect the environment, advance research and science, and align with our Kinross values.”

The donation is associated with Kinross Chile’s partnership with the University of Atacama to support education and development of natural heritage in the region.
