In early May, Kinross’ Toronto office kicked off the summer by welcoming 22 students as part of our ‘Gold Rush’ summer intern program!
The Gold Rush programs offers students a four-month internship with the opportunity to gain on-the-job training and experience centered in Toronto, with the opportunity for travel to our global operations. The program is over ten years old and offers internships to students in all disciplines, including mining, metallurgy, business optimization, geology, HR, sustainability, communication, finance and IT.
Kinross’ Gold Rush summer program has a long history of retaining talent in our workforce with over 25% securing full-time employment at Kinross upon graduation over the past five years.
In line with our commitment to Inclusion and Diversity, Kinross welcomed a diverse group of students in 2021, with almost half self-identifying as part of a minority group. Our goal is to broaden our workforce of diverse talent at all levels, including the next generation of miners through our Gold Rush program.
Let’s meet some of the students from our Government Relations team who share their diverse background and experiences:
Zoe Acuna, Government Relations Intern, Toronto
Zoe will be entering her fourth year in September at McMaster University studying Political Science and French.
Zoe is enjoying working with a variety of functions in the Company that have allowed her to gain a better understanding of how we work cross-functionally as an organization. Zoe’s interest in the Latin American environment stems from her Mexican roots that have driven her interest in ways responsible corporations can positively contribute to growth and development through foreign investment.
In the future, Zoe hopes to apply her Hispanic background and Canadian education – to pursue a career in international business, specifically in Latin America.
Mikhail (Mike) Grishin, Government Relations Intern, Toronto
Mikhail (Mike) will be entering his second year of studies in September at Centennial College studying Public Relations Management. This summer, Mike is using his background in public relations for monitoring, researching and data analysis on key political, policy, and regulatory developments in corporate areas of interest, with a focus on Russia and Eurasia.
Mike moved to Canada from Russia in 2020 where he spent his first eight months learning English. When searching for opportunities, he wanted to work somewhere that combined his culture with the opportunity to learn how Canadian companies manage and strengthen their international relations across different cultures.
Although new to mining, Mike has enjoyed learning about the industry and using his background and perspective to provide new insight to his team. Mike hopes to continue building on his skills and experience to pursue a career that relates to his field and Russian background.
