CEO participates in executive panel on renewable energy transition in Mauritania

In May, Paul Rollinson, President & CEO, participated in an event organized by the Minister of Petroleum, Mines and Energy, Abdessalam Mohamed Saleh, which highlighted Mauritania’s renewable energy transition and developing an eco-responsible mining industry in the country.

The event was hosted by Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani and the Ministry  and brought together government officials and executives across a variety of industries to have a discussion on the work being done to accelerate the energy transition in Mauritania, and how to work together to establish a greener mining industry.

Paul spoke on Kinross’ efforts to support renewable energies for the development of the mining industry in Mauritania, including Kinross’ commitment to reduce the Company’s intensity of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30% by 2030. The Company plans to support Mauritania’s green energy targets through the ongoing development of a 34-megawatt solar power plant that is expected to save 50,000 tons in GHG emissions per year at Tasiast over the life of mine. Kinross’ mine design optimization at Tasiast also contributed to lower waste haul cycle times, saving over two million litres of diesel in 2021.

“Kinross is committed to being a part of the solution to the global challenge that Climate Change presents, and we are investing in greener technologies at all stages of the mine life cycle to advance this goal,” said Paul. “We know that reducing GHG emissions and committing to renewable energy are goals shared by our partners in the government of Mauritania. Our plans go hand-in-hand, and we are looking forward to continuing to work together to address these in a constructive manner.”
