Bald Mountain’s 2018 summer students

Bald Mountain welcomed eight college students to the mine this summer to gain first-hand skills and experience in the mining industry.

The Bald Mountain summer hire program works in partnership with Geotemps, a recruitment and employment company, to give students the opportunity to turn theory into practice in a wide variety of fields ranging from Exploration, Human Resources, CSR, Environmental, Ore Processing, Mobile Maintenance and Capital Projects.

“We are lucky to have such a talented, motivated group of students on our team this year,” said Christine Whetten, Human Resource Manager, Bald Mountain. “The students gave 100% for every project they worked on and we hope they are inspired to pursue a career in the mining industry as the next generation of Nevada miners.”

Heather Esplain, Corporate Social Responsibility Intern, worked on a variety of community relations projects, learning more about Bald Mountain’s positive impacts and joint efforts with its neighbours.

“As a summer student in the CSR department, I learned a lot about Kinross’ commitment to community outreach, and further developing and helping areas in need,” said Heather. “Organizations in our community rely heavily on sponsorships and I am proud to see that Bald Mountain has played an instrumental role in working with these organizations to support their programs and goals.”

Derek Templeton, Mobile Maintenance Intern, returned to Bald Mountain for another summer with the program. Derek worked at Kinross for ten years when he decided to go back to school to further his education and career opportunities.

“The knowledge and experience I have gained at Kinross is one of a kind. The Company continues to welcome me back each summer while I complete my education, allowing me to put my knowledge into practice,” said Derek. “My coworkers here are family and are always eager and willing to help. I am lucky to be a part of the Bald Mountain team!”

The summer intern program is actively growing with plans to increase the enrollment of students over the coming years.
