Stormy joined Kinross in 2021 and was quickly recognized by her peers as being an advocate for the safety culture. Stormy can regularly be found seeking innovation for day-to-day tasks that help make her colleagues jobs safer and more efficient.
Earlier this year, Stormy identified the challenges associated with fixing front lights on D-10 dozers due to the height of the lightbulb that was difficult to reach by ladder. She came up with an idea to weld tie-off points to the equipment to allow mechanics to safely repair them without the risk of falling. She was also instrumental in the redesign of the Duck Pond holders, equipment used in case of a spill, on the haul truck fleet, making them safer and easier for operators and mechanics to reach and act upon in the event of a spill or leak.
Stormy believes a safety culture is a team effort that should constantly be a topic of discussion. She will regularly stand up during Maintenance Dispatch meetings to share personal stories that promote safety, or to identify areas at risk of safety incidents in order to proactively find solutions with her team.
Stormy is constantly learning new responsibilities and will often work outside her regular scheduled hours to take training classes or to train new employees. She can be found working one-on-one with new hires to ensure they have a clear understanding of our procedures and safety measures to ensure all employees are aligned with Kinross’ high safety standards.
“Stormy is a standout employee at Bald Mountain, not only for her efficiency in the workplace, but for her commitment to our core values and making sure all employees get home safe at the end of each shift. Having a team member like Stormy is a huge asset, her ability to drive safety culture to her peers is contagious and fosters a safer mining operation.”
