Making Spirits Bright: Giving Five Toronto Families a Christmas to Remember

“In Canada, it’s easy to forget that there are people in our own neighbourhoods who struggle to provide for their families during Christmas. Adopt-A-Family is an excellent program that gives back to people in our own backyard.” (Alyssa Chin, Legal Administrative Assistant, Toronto)

While Kinross’ corporate office is getting ready to celebrate the holidays with our annual Kids’ Christmas Party and a visit from Santa, the Company is also continuing another important tradition: for the fifth consecutive year, Kinross Toronto is supporting the Adopt-A Family Holiday Helpers program.

Thirty Kinross volunteers have spent the past few weeks buying and wrapping toys, books, clothes, diapers and groceries for five needy Toronto families. These families include a single mother trying to complete her high school diploma, a father of four children (each of whom suffer from behavioural issues), and a Native Canadian mother who works at a fast-food restaurant to support her four children, and who recently lost everything due to a bed-bug infestation.

“This was my chance to help give a family a beautiful Christmas, and to let them know that people who haven’t even met them wish them well,” said Colleen Lamont (Senior Analyst, Financial Planning & Analysis, Toronto). “I love that Kinross supports these types of programs. I do not know of any other employer that participates in so many philanthropic activities.”

Kinross donated $10,000 to buy the Christmas gifts for the five families. At the same time, Toronto employees raised an additional $2,500 by paying $5 every Friday in November to “dress down” (i.e. wear jeans and sneakers to the office.) The employee donation was matched by Corporate, bringing Kinross Toronto’s additional donation to nearly $5,000. This money will go directly to Holiday Helpers, to be donated to other families in need this holiday season.
