The team at Maricunga has faced its share of challenges and, each time, has shown that it can beat the odds. In March, the team proved its mettle again when torrential rain wiped out infrastructure in the Atacama region, leading to a nine-week suspension of operations at the mine.
To recognize the incredible effort to restore power and roads at Maricunga, a thirty-second commercial was created by Juan Catalán Figueroa, Communications, Copiapó.
While the video is in Spanish, non-Spanish speakers can easily appreciate the strong sense of pride it conveys in working for Kinross and being from Chile’s Atacama region. Click here to watch it.
The commercial shows Bernardo Urrutia, Plant Operator and Supervisor, Rohuer Díaz, Mine Operator and José Bustamante, Mechanical Specialist at the mine while well-known Chilean speaker Alejandro Costa says:
My region, our region, has begun to recover from climate disaster, and we, the people of the Atacama, will prove our ability to overcome any obstacle thanks to our courage, effort and determination.
Our passion for our land, the efforts we have made and our determination make me proud to be from the Atacama!
I am proud to be a miner and proud to work at Kinross.
“The team in Chile worked extremely hard to get the operations quickly back up and running. This showed real strength and a willingness to persevere. Thank you for the incredible work. Kinross came together during this difficult time,” said Rick Cruea, Vice-President and General Manager, Chile.
Kinross employees from around the world quickly turned to help, including Round Mountain, Kettle River-Buckhorn and Toronto employees who united to raise over $18,000 for Chilean relief.
