Round Mountain and Bald Mountain take top honours in safety competition

Round Mountain and Bald Mountain won eleven mine rescue awards in the 30th annual Elko Safety ‘Olympiad’ at the beginning of July. Congratulations to both teams!

The three-day competition included nine mine rescue teams from other gold mining companies across Nevada, Colorado and Utah.

The two Kinross Nevada teams were able to highlight their strengths in the inter-company competitions that ranged from hazmat, to fire, medical and large-scale disaster scenarios at the Elko Convention Center.

Here are Round Mountain and Bald Mountain’s final standings:

Round Mountain

1st place – Confined space
1st place – A flight
1st place – Fire
2nd place – Triage
2nd place – Hazmat

“We live and breathe safety every day at Round Mountain and I am incredibly proud of the team’s results,” said RW Carver, Health and Safety Manager, Round Mountain.

Tim Chapman, Equipment Operator, Bald Mountain, received the coveted Micheal Green Award for his exceptional knowledge and skills in the rope station.

“Our mine rescue team takes their job very seriously and they’ve trained hard to achieve this level of excellence. It is comforting to know we have this level of skill set in the unfortunate event that we have to put those skills to use,” said Clint Nebeker, Operations Manager, Bald Mountain.
